Opened for traffic in 1883 as a link from Brooklyn to Manhattan, it has been one of the most defining structures in New York City {and Brooklyn) history. When it was completed in May 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world and is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
